Department of Sport Science

In Ethiopia during the past three and half decades, physical education and sport have increasingly become an academic discipline. In the past physical education and sport were closely allied to the larger area of education, of which its attention has focused on the development of students in different schools.

Today the attention given to the role of physical exercises and sports which has now become part of activities in schools, colleges and universities, organizational settings, sports, and health clubs has been increasing than ever before. The demand of society in the area of physical activities for maintaining and developing total health and well-being will force professionals in the area to revise past approaches.

The sports science program under qualified leadership aids in the enrichment of an individual’s life. It aims at building a sound body, a sharp mind, and a wholesome personality. It is essential for the cultivation of vitality, obedience, discipline, and a positive attitude towards life and the world. The desire to prepare skilled and qualified sports professionals is increasingly felt in the country today Programs.

The sports science department is one of the eight departments that are found under the College of Natural and Computational Science. The department was established in 2005 E.C.  Since then, it has provided very significant contributions both to the Adigrat University and Tigray national state through providing research and community services, giving its prominence emphasis to the teaching and learning process.

The Department of Sport Science trains students for a BSc degree in sports science in a regular program and summer in-service program and a graduate program in MSc in Athletics Coaching. Having this in the baseline, the Department of Sport Science of Adigrat University has been working a lot since it started in 2005 E.C. and now endeavors promoting to sports science academy.

The general objective of the programs is to produce graduates with the optimum knowledge and skill development in Sports Science by equipping them with different techniques & skills of sports activities, knowledge of scientific analysis of human body movement in respect of physical activities & professionals at a different level of qualification who can take part in different sport aspects like in coaching, organizing, research, fitness instructors, etc.

Mission

  • The Department of Sport Science endeavors to be a premier professional program that attracts students interested in the field of recreation, sport, health, and wellness, performance in different competitions, training & coaching athletes and players for their best achievements, sound –scientific service to the community within and outside the country, quality management in sport science as well as education.

Strategic Objectives:

  • Provide knowledge, attitudes, and skills for students in the areas of sports, exercise science, coaching, and so on.
  • Prepare and facilitate short-term training or refresher programs such as seminars, workshops, symposia, etc.
  • Ensure quality of education in the area of Sports science.
  • Train academically competent professionals who can actively participate in the educational, health, social, and cultural sectors of society.
  • Develop student skills in using appropriate coaching methods.
  • Coach fundamental skills of different sports for youth
  • Provide trained personnel who can lead, and organize intramural & extramural activities in different organizations.
  • Provide advisory services in the area of sport for government and non-governmental organizations, clubs, fitness centers, etc.
  • Create an environment that supports and encourages national and international interaction that can contribute to the development of Sports.
  • Provide students with opportunities for field experiences to obtain practical experience needed for advancing their education and careers.
  • Conduct research related to sports science.
  • Organize in-service training, short-term training, and refreshment courses;
  • Organize sports programs for the benefit of student’s health & their recreational purposes.
  • Create feature job opportunities for students.
