Community Awareness Program on Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) Technology Held at Adigrat University.

The College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences at Adigrat University organized a community awareness program focused on Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) technology, currently implemented at the Muwtsae Worki and Baryewahit condominium sites as a sustainable solution for wastewater treatment.

The event brought together key stakeholders to discuss environmental sanitation challenges and explore practical approaches to improving waste management in Adigrat.

The program featured expert-led presentations, interactive discussions, and field visits to the two operational ABR sites, providing participants with practical exposure to the technology and its benefits.

Participants included representatives from the Adigrat Municipal Office, Adigrat Town People’s Representatives, the Adigrat Water Services Office, community representatives, researchers, and professionals working in the field.

During the presentations, experts explained that ABR technology offers an energy-efficient, cost-effective, and low-maintenance system for domestic wastewater treatment, particularly in areas where centralized sewerage systems are limited. Field visits enabled participants to observe the functioning of the reactors and connect theoretical knowledge with practical implementation.

Discussions highlighted the importance of multi-sector collaboration to expand the use of decentralized wastewater treatment technologies. Community representatives shared local sanitation challenges, while municipal and water service officials explored opportunities to integrate ABR systems into urban development planning.

Speaking at the event, Associate Professor Niguse Gebru, Dean of the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences, emphasized that supporting the community is one of the College’s core missions. He also noted that similar awareness programs will continue to strengthen technical capacity and promote public engagement in sustainable waste management initiatives.

This initiative reflects Adigrat University’s continued commitment to connecting research with practical community solutions and promoting sustainable environmental development.
