Adigrat University Receives Support to Strengthen Physics Laboratories

Adigrat University has received laboratory equipment to strengthen teaching, learning, and research activities in the Department of Physics under the College of Natural and Computational Sciences.

The handover ceremony was attended by senior university officials, college leadership, faculty members from the Department of Physics, and other members of the university community.

The initiative originated from the continued professional engagement of Professor Baker Farangis, who served the Department of Physics at Adigrat University with dedication in teaching and laboratory activities. Following the conflict in the area, Professor Baker left Adigrat University and moved to Germany, where he is currently working at Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen – University of Applied Sciences.

Professor Baker has previously contributed to strengthening academic and professional linkages between Adigrat University and German universities by facilitating institutional collaborations and partnerships.

Through his continued professional relationship with Mr. Gebregiorgis Haileslassie, a lecturer and researcher in the Department of Physics, efforts were made to identify potential sponsors who could support the rehabilitation and strengthening of the University’s Physics laboratories, which were affected by the conflict.

As a result of these efforts, Dr. Meenaxi Barkataki Ruscheweyh provided financial support, covering the full cost of laboratory equipment required by the Department of Physics, in the name of her late husband Professor Dr. Stephan Ruscheweyh.

The donated equipment includes Solar Energy and laboratory materials and instruments for Mechanics and Heat, Waves and Optics, Electricity and Magnetism, Wood Workshop, as well as other areas of physics education and practical training.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Mahari Gebresadik, Head of the Department of Physics, stated that the department had officially received a range of laboratory equipment. He noted that the materials will play a significant role in strengthening practical education, enhancing students’ experimental skills, and improving laboratory services.

Dr. Haftay Gebreyesus, Representative of the Vice President for Academic and Research Affairs, expressed appreciation to Mr. Gebregiorgis Haileslassie for his efforts in facilitating the support. He emphasized that the collaboration represents a valuable achievement for the University.

According to Dr. Haftay, such collaborations not only contribute to strengthening the teaching and research capacity of the Department of Physics but can also inspire other academic departments to establish similar partnerships with international institutions and professionals.

Overall, the support is expected to make a significant contribution to strengthening practical physics education, enhancing students’ experimental and research capacities, and further advancing Adigrat University’s international academic partnerships and collaborations.
