Department of Geology
Adigrat University is one of the public institutions of higher education in Ethiopia, established in 2011 with a mission to contribute to the sustainable socioeconomic development and poverty reduction program of the nation through the provision of societal needs-tailored education of professionals, undertaking problem-solving research, and providing community services.
By understanding the demands of natural resources (precious metal and water supply, oil, non-metals, coal resources, industrial minerals and gems, dimension stones) as an engine for the country’s economy, the University opened the Department of Geology in 2013 under the College of Natural and Computational Sciences. Ethiopia has a long history of mining, such as gold; iron mining, titanium, and salt extraction. Other important industrial minerals like gemstone, granite, gypsum, limestone, salt, sand, and scoria were also under exploitation and processing. The department plays a vital role by realizing the vision and mission of the university integrated with the community of Adigrat University in promoting the national plan geared towards poverty eradication.
Currently, the Department of Geology has 26 qualified staff members. Among them, were 19 lectures, 4 assistant lectures, 1 Assistant Professor, and 2 technical assistants. The specializations of the staff in the department are Economic geology, Structural geology, Hydrogeology, Stratigraphy and sedimentology, Geological engineering, geological science (Petrology), and Geophysics.

- The department strives to be a center of excellence in delivering relevant and quality education together with problem-solving research studies and community service engagements.
Mission Statement
- The mission of the department is to bring quality education and to create and effectively disseminate fundamental knowledge about the earth, and its resources (mineral resources, water, and oil). In addition to the quality of education, participating in research and community service and becoming a solution finder to the society and create a comfortable learning and teaching environment.

- Increase the number of students engaged in the department by preparing symposiums and conferences on the necessity of learning geology.
- Increase the number of student’s pass in exit exam.
- Make teachers focus and move in their normal activities with sufficient preparation following their responsibility and accountability.
- When students are fully and actively engaging, they become proud, well-rounded citizens of the University community, now and in the future.
Goal 2. Strengthen quality education
- Students link with different industries and get practical knowledge.
- Creating enhanced smart Laboratory and classroom in the department.
