School of Nursing and Midwifery

The Department of Nursing, one of the departments under the College of Medicine and Health Sciences at Adigrat University, was established in 2012 G.C. The department began its teaching and learning activities on November 12, 2012, with its first batch of 34 nursing students and 3 instructors. In 2016 G.C., the department graduated its first class, consisting of 27 BSc Nursing professionals. Since then, both the number of students enrolling in the program and those graduating from it have steadily increased, in response to the growing healthcare demands of the community.

Accordingly, to compensate for the increasing demand for trained Nursing Professionals, and per the pushing letters from the FDRE, Ministry of Education, Specialties of Nursing Programs, Namely: Comprehensive Nursing, Surgical Nursing and Pediatric Nursing were launched in 2018 G.C. The units under the department are Maternity and Reproductive Health Nursing and Emergency Medicine and Critical Care Nursing.

Currently, the department has accepted and enrolled 160 students.

Regarding human resources, currently Nursing Department has 42 academic staff members, 03 technical assistants and 01 secretary. Of the academic staff, 40 are on duty, and the remaining 02 are on study leave pursuing their postgraduate studies.

Strategic Initiatives

In addition to the provision of teaching and learning processes, the nursing department has started to support the nearby health facilities by engaging its instructors in the health facilities (Freweyni, and Fatsi), aiming to improve maternal and neonatal care, and the department is providing community service at Adigrat Prison Center.

 General Objective:

  • The main objective of the Nursing Program is to Produce Competent, Compassionate, Energetic and Dedicated Nurse Professionals through quality education who will carry out wellness promotion activities on primary, secondary and tertiary levels considering the components of the Nursing Process.

Specific Objectives:

The specific objectives the Nursing Program are to:-

  • Educate:Prepare graduates with a strong foundation in Nursing Knowledge, Attitude and Skills to provide competent and compassionate care.
  • Develop:Foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities in a clinical setting.
  • Instill:Cultivate professional ethics, communication skills, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
  • Equip:Provide graduates with the necessary skills to collaborate effectively with healthcare teams to optimize patient outcomes.
  • Lead:Develop future leaders in nursing who can contribute to the advancement of the profession
  • Promote researchthat addresses community healthcare priorities and improves nursing practice.

Department of Nursing activities broadly revolve around:

  • First activity: teaching and learning of undergraduate Nursing students.
  • Second activity: giving community services in catchment areas of Adigrat University to promote health and wellness.
  • Third activity: Conducting researches to improve Nursing practice and patient outcomes.

  Academic Program: The department delivers undergraduate degrees in generic and post-basic in Comprehensive, Surgical and Pediatric Nursing.

Departments
