Department of Computer Science

The Department of Computer Science was established under the College of Engineering and Technology in 2005 E.C. In the same year, the department launched a regular BSc degree program in Computer Science. At that time, the department used two computer laboratories, each with a capacity of thirty computers fully connected to the internet. These laboratories are used to conduct practical sessions for the BSc degree program.

The growing number of higher education institutions, combined with the shortage of highly qualified computer professionals in various sectors of the economy, led to the introduction of an MSc degree program in the 2008 academic year.

So far, the department has graduated over 350 BSc students and approximately 15 MSc students. Currently, due to the limited number of students passing the Grade 12 National Exam and the damage caused by the war, the department serves over 70 students with access to 18 computers.

The department also has 27 academic staff members, including 27 instructors and 2 laboratory assistants. Among them are 3 Assistant Professors, 20 Lecturers, and 4 Assistant Lecturers currently pursuing their MSc theses, along with 2 senior and chief Technical Assistants.

• Academic Program

The Department of Computer Science offers both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. However, the postgraduate program is currently inactive because students have been unable to pass the NGAT exam. The department is also planning to launch MSc programs with specializations in Cyber Security and Artificial Intelligence after the curriculum revision and accreditation processes are completed.

• Thematic research coverages in the department and other community services

The Department of Computer Science has different thematic Research coverage areas, including Machine Learning, AI, NLP, and Image Processing, as well as community services such as capacity building training for elementary and high school teachers in Eastern zones and creating awareness on the use of AI Technologies for supporting the education system for high school students in Eastern zone high schools.

• Achievements

The staff in the Department of Computer Science are participating in research and various community service activities. They are also involved in developing automated systems for the university, including the Student Information Management System (SIMS) and the Computer-Based Testing (CBT) system. In addition, the staff have expressed their willingness to contribute to the full automation of the university’s manual systems, in line with the goal of digitalization.
