College of Agriculture and Environmental Science

The College of Agriculture & Environmental Sciences (CAES) is one of the six active colleges at Adigrat University. It currently comprises the following five departments:

  • Animal Production and Technology

  • Plant Sciences

  • Natural Resource Management

  • Environmental Sciences

  • Horticulture

In addition, the college offers a postgraduate program in Animal Nutrition.

Mission
The mission of CAES is to:

  • Train professionals to enhance the agricultural knowledge and skills base, meeting the trained manpower needs of the nation and the region.

  • Conduct demand-driven research focused on national agricultural challenges to increase production and productivity, manage natural resources, and improve rural livelihoods through adaptable and appropriate agricultural technologies and management practices.

  • Provide community services to governmental and non-governmental agricultural organizations and offer direct and indirect outreach services to smallholder farmers, pastoralists, and agro-pastoralists in the region and neighboring areas.

The College aspires to be a center of excellence in agricultural and environmental training and research at the global level.

Academic Approach
The College began teaching in 2012/2013 with 127 students using a modular educational system, which is competence-based and learner-centered. This approach enhances curriculum flexibility, student mobility, and the connection between education and the world of work. Today, the College has approximately 927 undergraduate students and 10 postgraduate students.

Teaching, Research, and Community Engagement
The College’s activities focus on three main areas:

  2. Research and Community Service – Enhancing farmer productivity and promoting sustainable and modern agricultural practices.

  3. Income Generation – Establishing university farms to support teaching, research, and community service programs.
