About Adigrat University (AdU)

Adigrat University (AdU), founded in 2011, is a vibrant public university nestled in the historic town of Adigrat, in Ethiopia’s Tigray Region, roughly 900 km north of Addis Ababa. Over the years, it has grown into a hub of learning, offering a wide range of programs across six colleges, one school, and one institute. Students can pursue undergraduate and postgraduate studies in diverse fields, including agriculture, natural sciences, engineering, health sciences, business, economics, and the social sciences and humanities.

Home to around 16,000 regular students and an additional 6,000 in continuing education, AdU thrives thanks to its dedicated staff—over 1,100 academics and more than 1,500 support personnel—who are committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders, thinkers, and innovators. The university provides modern facilities such as a digital library, video conferencing systems, a well-equipped data center, and an automated student management system, supporting both learning and research. Faculty and students alike are engaged in numerous projects that aim to solve real-world problems and contribute to the community.

Like many institutions in the region, AdU faced serious challenges during the Tigray conflict starting in 2020, with significant damage to its infrastructure and disruption of academic life. Despite these hardships, the university has bounced back, resuming education in August 2023 for both regular and postgraduate students. Today, Adigrat University continues to stand as a beacon of knowledge and opportunity, committed to shaping competent, ethical, and socially responsible graduates who can make a meaningful impact on society.
