Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences

The department of pharmacy operates within the College of Medicine and Health sciences (CMHS) in Adigrat University. The college was established in October 2012 G.C to meet the national and international health policy needs by training competent and compassionated health care professionals. Meanwhile the department of pharmacy was launched in 2014 G.C with 36 generic first batch students envisioning producing competent, ethically grounded, and qualified pharmacy professionals through quality education, problem solving research activities and community engagements.  Since the program’s establishment, a total of 205 students have graduated. These graduates comprise five batches of regular students, two batches of post-basic regular students, and one batch of extension students.

Beyond its teaching-learning commitments, the department is intensely involved in conducting impactful, problem-solving research and extensive community engagement. This active approach fosters practical-oriented education across various pharmacy settings, ensuring graduates gain the requisite skills, knowledge, and professional attitude. Through rigorous coursework, laboratory sessions, and mandatory clinical clerkships in hospitals and community pharmacies, and pharmaceutical industries graduates are prepared to contribute effectively to the rational use of medicines, disease management, and public health initiatives across the region.

The department maintains a robust academic capacity, employing 30 academic staff members with diverse specializations to educate its student and run other academic activities. With over 165 undergraduate pharmacy students actively engaged in learning, the current faculty-to-student ratio is well-established to support the teaching process.

Strategic objectives

General objective:

The main objective of Pharmacy Program is to train highly qualified pharmacists who fulfil the essential, minimum common expectations of health care systems worldwide while fulfilling local needs. Graduates would be expected to have the required knowledge, skill, attitude and behaviours to support the health care system and to respond to patient needs working in hospital and community pharmacies; drug manufacturing, import and wholesale companies; public health services; academic institutions; pharmaceutical research; drug regulatory body and quality control organizations and other relevant areas of practice.

Specific objective:

  • To equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide high quality pharmaceutical care, while fostering a commitment to lifelong learning and professional development.
  • To train and educate pharmacy students to develop a strong understanding of fundamental pharmaceutical sciences through practice-based training that help students to solve real-world problems in various pharmaceutical settings in accordance the national and international standards.
  • To instill ethical principles and professional conduct in all areas of pharmacy practice that help students demonstrate a high level of professional ethics and a strong sense of responsibility to satisfy the pharmaceutical needs of society.
  • To foster skills in pharmaceutical research to contribute to drug discovery, development and evaluation and support innovation in traditional medicine, pharmaceutical technology and public health interventions, contributing to evidence-based healthcare and innovation.
  • To train students to engage in health promotion and disease prevention within the communities that contribute in promoting public health and social accountability.
  • To enable graduates to demonstrate leadership in pharmaceutical policy development and drug management systems.
